[ rumours spread fast at lunch about there being a murder in the city. most people brushed it off, rumours happen, especially ones about people getting hurt in big cities. but, with a gun? in japan? ...that sort of sounds like the beginning of some kind of story.

but, at the end of the day, there's an announcement over the PA system. all after-school activities have been cancelled, and students are to head home as soon as possible. police men will be stationed. details will be released at a later date. ]

[Kida Masaomi isn't much for after-school activities, and when his are cancelled, it doesn't dampen his mood. The rumors that have been flying around since lunch manage the seemingly impossible deed for a time, but in the end, ushering Mikado home safely is a bigger priority. What better way to do that than to sneak out early and tackle his best friend the moment he exits his classroom with a cheery shout of:]

BANG!

[He grins like a maniac. Maybe he is one.]

I shot Mikado!

[ he jumps a little! he's a little more curious than scared about the situation -- but there is still the fear, there. this is living in the city, isn't it... ? ]

Ma-- Masaomi...!

[ the tackle makes him stumble! but he manages not to fall over. ]

[For all of Mikado's balancing efforts, he receives a pout in reply.]

Not even a little swoon, Mikado? I'm disappointed. You gotta step up your game, or you'll never make it in a Western.

[ he's gotten pretty good at balancing! they're just left with kida hanging off of mikado, which is... pretty par for the course.

sigh! ]

Your jokes are easy enough to put up with, but is now really the time...?

Of course! [Hanging like a monkey on a tree branch. Masaomi slumps over Mikado's shoulder.] If I made the same joke yesterday, nobody would've gotten it.

Now it's just in bad taste...

[ a teacher down the hall calls out to them and tells them to get moving! a police officer is with them. the announcement definitely wasn't kidding about that. ]

[A harried teacher and an officer of the law is apparently just enough to straighten Masaomi out, freeing Mikado's shoulders. He can't comply silently though. Even in his peaceful, romantic comedy high school life, he can't feel entirely comfortable around the police.]

At least my jokes don't linger.

[The dry comment is quiet, compliant, but distinctly insulting. The bad taste in his mouth is from this joke of an escort.]

[ the streets are eerily quiet. it's ikebukuro, it should be loud, right? even if raira isn't in the heart of it, to see people walking quietly with their heads down, an officer here and there waving them along is... ]

Tense.

[Masaomi verbalizes the feeling with a growing frown as he scans the silent city streets. Shocking the whole area into a quiet, anxious stupor... That's quite the feat. It makes Masaomi wonder how smug the guy with the smoking gun must be right about now.]

Maybe I should hang at your place.

-Eh?

[ he didn't expect that offer. honestly, he wants to go home, turn his computer on, log on and see what everyone is saying about the situation, and... he can't exactly do that with masaomi in the room. ]

But your house is so far from mine... If you left after dark, you could-

So I won't leave after dark.

[He sure is inviting himself over for the entire night. Sorry, Mikado. Someone seems to have made up his mind for once.]

...I- I only have one futon!

So lend me a pillow!

--We're going to sleep on the same one?!

[ but that's what married people do! ]

I can't very well let you sleep on the floor, now can I?

[This sounds backwards, but not as backwards as it should when spoken with Masaomi's cool, pragmatic tone.]

[ mikado opens his mouth to argue, but the officer who had been stationed at raira's gates has had enough of their loitering, and ushers them along!

as they start to head back, there are more officers peppered about the city. ]

There are so many... Do you think the shooter's been caught...?

[No, Masaomi thinks. Not this fast, not if they're this hyped. They'd get that information out as soon as possible for their own reputations.]

Who knows. If he hasn't, he's probably long gone by now.

[That doesn't stop Masaomi from picking up his pace or walking backward every so often.]

Maybe they just need to find the gun.

...That's a little scary, isn't it?

[ it's frightening to think that a gunman who's killed someone is still on the loose, but it's also... it's definitely, definitely exciting. mikado wants to know more, wants to follow the case, wants to move dollars to see if anyone knows anything about it and maybe they could even catch him before the police did and -- ]

Eeh... Do you think the victim was involved in something, with him...?

...Probably.

[Going so far as to buy a smuggled gun for a simple mugging or a random shooting seems a bit much. Of course, the victim could have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.]

Depends on what the shooter wanted, I guess.

Ah... If it was money, he would have robbed a bank or convenience store... A grudge, maybe? Gang activity?

[Masaomi does not approve of Mikado's growing interest. He slaps his hand against his friend's back.]

If you go around bringing gangs into everything, you're gonna make yourself paranoid. We're talking about one guy, one victim. [So far.] That's it.

[ he gives a small yelp, stumbling forward from the slap! and then frowns when he regains his footing. ]

But... what's stopping him, if he hasn't been caught? This is Ikebukuro, so... isn't "bringing gangs into everything" a natural thought, when it comes to gun violence...?

Maybe it's natural, but it's not always right.

[Even if it is gang related, especially if it is gang related, this isn't what Masoami wants to talk about.]

You'd still feel embarrassed if you "naturally" assumed a hot chick was hitting on you only to look down and realize she really did drop her pencil!

[ he thinks that joke was a bit far for a reach, but. whatever. he knows to brush off kida's bullshit by now.

they finally arrive at his apartment, though! ]

[With the door of Mikado's apartment arrives an abrupt topic change.]

How 'bout this: we order delivery and play games all night. Dinner's on me!

[And maybe his parent's wallet, if Mikado decides that the price for a night over is more expensive than he can handle.]
