[ there's almost no hope left, for this world. not only humans have used up the energy it was created with, but the planet itself has been sucking itself dry. only the wealthiest of areas are still lush with clear water and full forests, the majority of the planet sandy, dried out, struggling to survive. while scientists are searching for a way to abandon this planet and move onto the next, those that still follow the religion of spirits that guard the earth have proposed an alternate.
human lives are made up of energy that can help regenerate the earth. a colony, cut off from civilization by a small mountain range crafted a way to utilize life in a form of sacrifice. when two individuals are embedded with stones that were brought up from mines hundreds of years ago, when the earth still had a chance, a bond is formed that circles energy back into the soil. these people are chosen by their breeding and by their hearts, and even though their faces will never be public, they're treated as heroes, the saviours of the planet.
they're also treated as prisoners. the room that the two have been given is bland and cold, there are two beds, a desk, a bookshelf, and not much more. of course, they're permitted to wander the sanctuary of the colony, but leaving is strictly forbidden. it's a sad existence, being taken from the lives they knew to be locked away, knowing they're going to die. it's sad and it's annoying, and gokudera can't help but scoff loudly as he recounts the ceiling tiles of his cell for the third time today. the skin around the gem in his chest still hurts and the guy he's supposed to be within ten metres of for the rest of his life is an utter dumbass and he really just wants to wake up from this bad dream. ]

Right.

...It's Yamamoto. Don't know if you caught it before. [he's being charitable; he's pretty sure they were introduced. but he might as well make the offering.]

[ really, he's being rude and he can't bring himself to care, but he's still following this guy. this colony is going to be a place he'll need to get used to, and so will this person. ]

Tch-- They couldn't have picked a less shitty place for this colony?

[not like he can totally forget, stuck permanently no more than ten meters away from a perpetually irritable reminder and the constant urge to scratch the gem embedded in his chest. But he could see how it'd be easy to forget what it's all for]

[he doesn't really feel like defending the nebulous idea of the People In Charge either, though. But he's pretty determined to find the bright side of the place as he looks around. It feels small and dry and dusty and kind of bleak, but there's got to be something decent about it.]

[ Gokudera is pretty sure, at this point, that listening to these people in charge and their reasoning is never something he will care about. He never asked to be some saviour of the world. Never wanted his life to become the earth's life. ]

[scuffs his foot in the dirt, glancing over at Gokudera. He's not actually sure there is a neutral topic with him, but it's worth a try.]

Green.

Oh. [and then he has to grope for a follow-up that isn't "do you miss it?" or something equally bad.]
That sounds cool.

[ he swallows hard, barely wanting to talk but he's on a roll, and as if he's going to be able to hide things from this guy for long ]
I wasn't even allowed to, but my blood matched up with the damn search--

[It seems like a dumb question, but he kind of just wants to keep him talking. Either way, it sounded like he'd been stuck, there or here.]

[he waves his hands in a deflection, laughing automatically, sheepishly. He probably should've guessed that.]
I guess it's personal.

[ he doesn't turn away, but he crosses his arms and leans against a nearby wall. ]
Your turn.

[Or, wait, maybe that wasn't what he meant.]
Oh, haha, you mean where I'm from. It's not that green, I guess. Or that big. But there's a lake and fishing and stuff.
[And it's home.]
